BUHLER RECREATION PARK'S GRAND OPENING

Buhler Recreation Park official Grand Opening was held on May 24, 2008. The day began early with a free Pancake Breakfast served up by Casera Credit Union.

The official Ribbon Cutting took place at the centre circle, with John and Bonnie Buhler doing the honours. The Transcona Pipe Band then led the dignitaries to the main stage. On hand to take part were Premier Gary Doer, MP Vic Toews and Mayor Sam Katz. Other special guests in attendance included MLA’s Daryl Reid and Bidhu Jha, Councillor Russ Wyatt and Buhler Facility Manager Steve Mymko. EWSA President Tom Thompson served as Master of Ceremonies. Steve Mymko was honoured for his efforts in making the park a reality, the main road to the clubhouse will now be known as “Steve Mymko Circle. The College Pierre Elliot Trudeau Chamber Choir provided musical entertainment for the ceremonies.

Once the formal proceedings ended, family fun was the order of the day, with a wide variety of entertainment and activities.  Many activity centres were set up including  The Bubble Man, Majake, Home Depot, Future Shop video games, Winnipeg Dance Force, Mad Science, the Fires Safety House, City of Winnipeg’s Car Town, Crafts by Cheryl Rempel, Panthers Gymastics, Boston Pizza, Mr. Artists Man Caricatures, and the Choo Choo Bouncer.   The main stage featured constant entertainment, with the College Pierre Elliot Trudeau Jazz Ensemble, the Murdoch McKay Collegiate Jazz Band, The Transcona Collegiate Jazz Band, Bill ‘n jay Cool Beans, The Walsh Twins, Krista Rey and Fred Penner performing.

Saturday evening featured a Celebrity Baseball Game, where the Buhler Red Team defeated the Buhler Blue Team 6-5. Umpire John Buhler managed to avoid controversy by calling a fair game.

The evening ended with great fanfare, with performances by Caraballo and Piano Catz, followed by an awesome performance by the Fire Pixies and a fireworks display.

To cap off  the weekend, more than 50 boys and girls baseball and softball teams competed in the first Wayne Tucker Memorial Transcona Sports Weekend.

BUHLER RECREATION PARK FUNDRAISING SOCIAL: JUNE 16, 2007

The Buhler Recreation Park fundraising social held at East End Community Club on June 16 was a fun evening - thank you to all who attended.  Special thanks go out to the Transcona Community Clubs (East End, Oxford Heights, Park City and Southside) and to all of the individual and corporate sponsors who donated prizes for the silent auction.

BUHLER RECREATION PARK TO HOST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Buhler Recreation Park has been chosen as the site for the 2008 Canadian Senior Women's Open Fast Pitch Championships, to be held August 13-17, 2008.



BUHLER TRIBUTE DINNER A HUGE SUCCESS

On January 18, 2007 at Canad Inns Club Regent, the East Winnipeg Sports Association hosted "Giving Back to the Community", an evening in honour of John and Bonnie Buhler for their many philanthropic works in various communities throughout Manitoba. In keeping with the theme of the event, all proceeds from the evening were donated to Buhler Recreation Park.

Dignitaries in attendance included His Honour the Honourable John Harvard, Her Honour Lenore Berscheid and His Worship Mayor Sam Katz. Representatives from the community and the various organizations the Buhlers have supported over the years attended this sold out event.

Highlights of the evening included a memorable video tribute to John and Bonnie produced by Impact Productions, a humourous tribute by Mayor Sam Katz, the presentation of a $15,000 donation from Molson Canada, and the unveiling of the official logo for the Park, designed by Brock Tropea, winner of the logo design contest. David Angus, President and CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce generously donated his time to chair the event, and Bill Knight acted as Master of Ceremonies.
